Don't Squeak Like A Chicken, Soar Like An Eagle ...
... often, the eagle preys on the chicken.
Today's topic is on the eagle species! How apt! If I were an animal, I would be an eagle. The eagle has no fear of adversity : )
Do you know that birds of prey are called raptors and eagle is a bird of prey? This set comprises of 23 cards and please feel free to DIY this topic yourself, it's pretty interesting and you will awed by the eagles! : )

Another set to our collection!
Daddy and I did 5 different topics today and this is one of the topic I came up with! : ) We really have to put on our thinking hat when we think of new topics to do because we have already covered most of the basic topics. As for the tougher topics, we hope to introduce it at a more appropriate time (more age-appropriate) so that our little girl will be able to relate to it better.
Our little girl is now a little chatterbox, she will point to each and every thing she knows or recognizes anywhere, anytime. Like now, she is in love with the STOP sign. Yes, the STOP sign. She saw it on one of the storybooks when we were reading to her and she recognizes it! When she sees it on the road, she will say "Mommy, STOP" and she will want to kiss/hug/high 5 the sign. Now, she can say the S, O and P of the word STOP, one more T to make it complete : ) I guess that is what makes learning fun, it should be fun and spontaneous! : ) Maybe I should consider making a set of flashcards with the STOP sign, that shall be tomorrow's topic! : )

Get creative with your flashcards!
We just printed this set of flashcards for our home practice tomorrow because our little girl just realized that apples have seeds, so it gave us an idea to do these topic for her - fruits with many seeds and fruits with 1 seed. I had a lot of fun doing up these flashcards, sometimes you really have to be creative in your topics : ) Our flashcards topics are mostly inspired by our little one, we will try to do the topics which interest her so that learning is fun for her : )

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star & 3 Blind Mice
Today, I was just randomly singing to my daughter and halfway through I said, "Twinkle Twinkle Little ....", purposely leaving out the word star. And to my amazement, she actually said "STAR!" I thought I was dreaming so I tried again. I said, "Three blind ...." and she said "MICE!" loud and clear.
These are the 2 songs that we flashed just a week ago. Flashcards can be fun too, and it can be incorporated into a song for the little one. Now I am more motivated to do more songs flashcards : )

How to flash?
How to do home practice effectively? (in my humble opinion)
1. Create a FUN setting! A child learns best when he or she is having fun! So do not make the session stressful for the child, because the child can feel it and that will impede the learning process.
2. Practise, Practise, Practise before you start flashing to your child. My husband and I spent many nights practising on the speed before we started flashing to our daughter. More haste less speed. To achieve the purpose of flashcards, we will have to flash each card in less than 1 second.
3. For a start, begin with 50-100 cards and gradually increase the number of cards when you think your child is ready for more. You can flash in 2 sessions a day, but we are currently flashing 300 cards in 1 session.
4. Include flashcards in your child's daily routine. Choose a time most suitable to do flashcards and include it in your child's routine so that it becomes part of it. For us (without fail), we will do flashcards after our daughter's nap and lunch (to ensure that she is well rested and full!) and she knows because it is part of her routine now. Each session only lasts 10-15 minutes : )
5. Have a cosy little corner to do flashcards. It really helps when there's no distraction so that the child and the parent can focus during the 10-15 minutes so a nice little cosy corner with no distraction will be ideal : )
6. Do not repeat the same topic twice a day. Have new topics constantly to arouse their interest, so we did about 100 topics in a month (about 2-3 new topics a day)
Lastly, the core of learning and education is LOVE. Flashcards can only do this much : )

Why Flashcards? : )
Why and how are flashcards useful for a child's learning?
Firstly, flashcards stimulate a child's brain, specifically the right brain when it is being flashed at a high speed. It also increases the processing speed of the brain and trains photographic memory.
Secondly, it helps to build up the child's vocabulary and gradually enables the child to learn how to read independently.
We have seen these benefits in our 18-month old toddler girl after we started flashcards a month ago. We have not looked back since! We are just so glad we started her on flashcards and not procrastinate because of the hassle of doing flashcards. It is never too late to start, and education for your little one is priceless : )
We started with 3 topics (100 cards) and now we are flashing 30 topics (about 300 cards) on a daily basis. We have done close to 100 topics for her and we are still adding new (and more creative) flashcards to the addition!
And lately, we have received requests to print and share some of the flashcards, and so we have decided to sell our flashcards collection : ) We can also help to customize the topics of your choice if you have a topic in mind that is not in our list!
Cheers! : )
